SOUTHERN COMFORT!
Ask my Mom about Kim and Southern Comfort and a particularly awkward introduction between my high school boyfriend and my Dad. "Ah, hi, Dr. Rossi. Here's Kim." Dead drunk with my boots on the wrong feet I believe. Ah crazy youth!
But I digress. Check out this photo! My husband Mark went to Nashville on business yesterday. No, he does not sell banjos, big-hair hair spray or rhinestone jackets. But he has a client outside of Nashville so there he went.
He called me to say he saw "GOO GOO's" in the airport store. Hey, I might be a Yankee to the core, but I know what a GOO GOO is - even if I'd never tasted one. Southern Treat Extraordinaire! And MOON PIES! The original. The real deal. Not the Burry knock-offs I ate as a kid. (Isn't the packaging gorgeous!?) I said "Oh my Gosh! Bring Some Home!" I figured he'd bring a Goo Goo and a Moon Pie. Not an entire box. But StagMan is a generous sort. So I now have boxes of the stuff.
I ate a Moon Pie. Tasty. I haven't tackled the Goo Goo's yet. Got to pace myself. Is it 10:00am yet???
If any of you Southerners would like a Northern equivalent let me know. I'll send you a box of Funny Bones, Yodels and Sky Bars.
Hope y'all have a good day.

Moon Pies are the BEST! I suspect I've only had the knockoffs you mention though. How sad.

Jeez! I'm so totally oblivious to all of these yummies. Must be a regional thing that leaves us Southwesterners in the dust.

Funny, I remember reading the Stephanie Plum novels and thinking that Tastykakes were a made up brand. I thought this for years until I stumbled on their website.

Enjoy your goodies!

TastyKakes are the PRIDE OF PHILLY! Oh my god are they good! Chocolate Kandy Kakes feature prominently in my book! The NE has the DRAKE'S bakery - a lot of items like Hostess's items. I guess the Midwest has Little Debbie. Never caught onto that brand. And do you remember DOLLY MADISON? They advertised on every Charlie Brown special when I was a kid. I've never ONCE seen a Dolly Madison cake though! Goo Goo's calling meeeeee. MUST RESIST!

We have Dolly Madison! I think they make Zingers! Yep, just checked. It appears that it's the same company. Hostess/Dolly Madison/Drakes. I've never heard of Drakes, but the Yodels on the website look yummy. :)

I'm a total sucker for snack cakes.

Oh the evils of the SoCo. So it's those kinds of stories: I wasn’t going to mention the incident when my mother resorted to turning off all the heating in the house at 2am, to try to entice a certain sleeping locked-in-the-bathroom drunk to wake up and let himself out. The freeze-him-out trick managed to get the rest of the house up within an hour or so, and there was about to be a sortie to break down the bathroom door to check for a pulse, when said drunk casually opened the door to a cold and worried group to reveal, “oh, must have been something I ate.”

My Irish friend - I'd have assumed Jameson's but YOU? SoCo? What was that all you could sneak? That's my excuse. The mere smell of the stuff makes my turn green lo these MANY years later! Something you ate.....

Hmm. SoCo. I'm sure I have a story about it, but strangely enough can't remember. Definitely a high school thing, though.

My grandparents would always bring us Goo-Goos when they'd visit from TN. I love Moon Pies, too. Yummy. I remember when we moved to Nashville from MA, I didn't understand what the whole Krispy Kreme craze was about - there were always KK fundraisers at school - you win a contest, you'd get KKs during home room. I preferred Dunkin' Donuts, of course - Munchkins Represent! Once I had HOT Krispy Kremes, after drinking or while still drunk (possibly SoCo?), that's when I realized what they were all about! Now Krispy Kreme is everywhere, but fortunately not close enough to my house that I can go there frequently or I'd be a fatter ass.

Here in San Francisco, we get the odd Dolly Madison and that ubiquitous b*tch, Little Debbie. Debbie is fine, but she ain't no Tasty Kake. Not even close.

Spent some time in the Souf - ever put your SoCo in your CoCola bottle, add salted shelled peanuts, and shake? Shake, drink, and chew. Get your buzz on while you eat.

Interesting.

OH THE MEMORIES! I USE TO LOOOOOVE GOO GOO CLUSTERS! OMG!!!

Ah, the Zinger. They're like a Twinkie, but smaller and more dense I think. Haven't had one in ages. But...they come in all different varieties. Vanilla, frosted vanilla, chocolate, coated in raspberry and rolled in coconut. I'm getting hungry with all this talk!

I love moon pies, although I'm partial to the banana flavor. BTW, Goo Goos are awesome frozen. Just watch your teeth.
