Who has the greatest brother in the world? I do.

My brother Rich is an architect. He and his partner Ed live in DC. They "get" me. They really do. I love them both dearly.

And Rich and I share a retro, kitsch sensibility you just can't buy. Sometimes you have to MAKE it. Look at what he made for his home. It's a Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer DIORAMA!!!!!

Note his attention to detail...

I would like to point out that if I had made this diorama (in between mopping up the flood, wiping Bella's nose, cleaning up poop, bakiing GFCF Italian Amaretti cookies, blah blah) the characters would be made from Marzipan.

In addition, my brother and Ed FED US last night by sending Maryland crab cakes as our Christmas gift. The crab reference was not lost on me, guys.

Merry Christmas!

That's beautiful, Kim! Your brother sounds like a great guy. My brother and I get along swimmingly, even though he's a conservative, er, excuse me, libertarian, and I'm pretty darn liberal. We manage to put all that aside when we're together and revel in snarkiness and sarcasm.

The crab cakes sound wonderful, too!

Hi, Lawrer! Isn't he talented?? Now let's find some billionaire (are there any left?) who wants to commission Rich to build a lifesized version in his backyard!

(PS We have that sort of "mental illness" in our family too. She lives in Texas (need I say more?) and I love her just as much as my brother. Her diorama skills may be lacking, her politics make my teeth hurt, but she used to make the most beautiful wreaths you've ever seen. I still have mine from her and they are almost 15 years old. Family is family - and I got a good one!

The Island of Misfit Toys! One of the greatest moments in film history (at least from a child's perspective) is when Santa shows up to rescue the toys from oblivion.

Yes - dropping by umbrella in the chimneys of deserving boys and girls, finally finding a home. A universal theme. We all want to belong and be loved. Though sometimes we also want a few more things to cushion life's blows.

Nicely done.

I've always wondered what exactly was wrong with the doll that she ended up on the Island of Misfit Toys. In an interview, Rankin-Bass' official explanation was "emotional issues" from being abandoned.

D. Moe - way? I asked on HuffPo when I wrote a piece about autism and the misfit toys. I never could figure out her problem. But WHY was she abandoned as a misfit in the first place??? It's wrong I tell you! Makes me want to squirt jelly at someone!
