The Curly Girl Cut

Three years ago about now I read a book called "Curly Girl" by Lorraine Massey, a stylist in NYC. I picked it up at the library in Hudson, Ohio where I lived at the time. You know how sometimes you glimpse a book on the return cart and pick it up? That was "Curly Girl." I'd never gone over to whatever shelf it was headed for on that cart. Let's see. Mystery, Fiction, Horrible Hair.

NE Ohio is where I had gotten the second worst hair cut of my life - at a salon in STOW Ohio where the owner bragged that he had clients coming to see him all the way from Nebraska. I should have dropped the Grape Nehi and Saltines with Velveeta he was serving and run when I heard that. I didn't, and instead of a Debra Messing curl, I got a mushroom cap with Carol Brady wisps.

If you go to www.devachansalon.com you'll link into Lorraine Massey's salon in Soho (short for South of Houston, a trendy area in NYC. And Houston is pronounced HOUSE-tin, not HUSE-tin.) NY really wants little to do with Texas. She trains hair stylists around the country and now there are even stylists in Cleveland and Akron. Although in typical New Yorker view of the world, they spell it Cleaveland. (Cleveland is actually a nice little city, loaded with cultural gems, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and a housing market that makes me cry with regret now that I'm in CT.)

My cut is next week at a salon in CT with a trained "curl consultant." I'll let you know how it goes. Pray for me.

Kim you're not just going to a salon, you're going to a departure lounge! Is this where they send you off to Akron or CLEAVEland to get your hair cut???

YES! Cleaveland, isnt' that terrible? That poor city gets no respect and its really very nice in many, many ways. The price is definitely NY - $90 for a cut! It had better be awesome. I'm going to the Backspace writers event in NY on 11/3 and pray it's without the mushroom/Carol Brady.

Don't be so hard on Cleveland: It's a lot like Detroit, but without all the glitter.

Harvey -- let's not get started on the pizza, eh? I'll live in a cardboard box here in CT, just DON'T take away my Frank Pepe's pizza! ;)

Let me tell you how good things are in Cleveland. I got those "Vote for Me" postcards from two of my incumbent representatives today. One of them, Steven LaTourette, voted for three-year IEPs (individualized education plans) for disabled students and severely cutting back parents' rights to take their school district to court, while the other, Kevin Coughlin, is singularly responsible for keeping mercury in vaccines in Ohio.

Harvey, not to mention Boehner, who was responsible for snuffing out the Combatting Autism Act with Joe Barton from Texas. I still miss my nice house. But I'll take my pizza and my kick ass CT IEP's any day of the week over.

Yesterday the school piled on more services for my littlest.

I used to go to a beauty school for my haircut. Then I went to Bo Rics ($1 off coupon). What's the difference between a good haircut and a bad haircut? About two weeks. It'll grow back.

JR, my love. What's the difference between a 30 "ott" (no idea what that means) shotgun and a Saturday Night Special? They both emit bullets at an alarmingly fast rate for the express purpose of ripping flesh.

And I cut my OWN hair for 2 years when my husband was out of work. I can be very economical too. This is truly a splurge.
