When Make Believe is REAL

Wow! Miss G did just the greatest thing. I made a GFCFSF spice cake for dinner. Dad's away (again) and the girls did play! What the hell - cake is GOOD for dinner. I asked Miss G to get two forks to set the table. And she took them and made antennae and said "I'm an alien!" and then laughed at her joke. Imaginary play is a biiiig step in our household. Some kids with autism are very literal and concrete - lack of imaginary play is a diagnostic marker of autism.

More cake for my little alien! (We always DID think she came from another planet.)

Imaginary play was a big step for us too. He is 9 and still doesn't quite have the hang of it, but he at least sort of tolerates it from others. He is also coming around to "humor" (which seems a funny thing to learn by rote) and we about had a party the day he LIED about something, we were so happy! My ABA therapist that was actually a pretty advanced skill. So while any other parent would be reprimanding their child for being deceitful, we were happy to see that he could "say" one thing but "mean" another. Wow.

Funny how you look at things so differently when you come in from the autism angle.

How fabulous!

I hope you have many more moments like this one to celebrate, Kim.

Kat, lying? FANTASTIC! Only an autie Mom would rejoice in that though. LOL!

Hello there Lady Bronco! I hope my next moment involves an AGENT!

Awesome Kim!!! And who says Miss G comes from another planet?? Maybe you and Mark did (tongue in cheek here).

Oh yeah, imaginary play, humor and lying. Big ones, and absolutely reason in this house to throw a BIG party (cake is GFCFSFEFNFYFSF of course, LOL).

Salamander made me roar the other day.. One of his supplement concoctions hadn't made it 'in' yet, and I reminded him that 'it had been sitting there for a while'. He didn't miss a beat, looked me dead in the eye and said 'Well mom, maybe you should tell it to stand up!'.

Cheeky little bugger..

My pal Maureen pointed me to the Namaste brand of GFCFSFPF mix. www.namastefoods.com I think. The Spice cake was awesome. I added flax meal for Omegas, and extra egg (organic eggs.) Next time I'll add grated zucchini.

Petra, I would expect nothing less than Cheeky from Salamander; YOUR offspring!

Very cute! The other day Hutton made a joke about our dog "eating poop" when he really ate a cookie one of the boys dropped. Hutton thought that was hilarious, and kept repeating, "Fergus ate poop!" and laughing hysterically. Hey, I thought it was funny, too, and most NT boys make poop jokes all the way up to high school and beyond, right? :)
