Success, one bite at a time.
This is Miss M. I attended a breakfast at her middle school this morning and heard a wonderful story. I shall share it, like any proud mom.

Mia sits with the 7th graders at lunch. I make gluten free bread, raw almond butter and organic jam sandwiches for lunch for Mia and Gianna. I cut Gianna's into quarters. I cut Mia's s into bite sized pieces, as she has a tendancy to cram food in her mouth (a sensory issue.)

Every week I bake the bread, make the sandwiches, wrap them in wax paper (no plastic or aluminum!) and place them into freezer bags. I label the bags, "G's" and "M's" so I know whose is cut properly. I know, you're thinking, "Why don't you just give them two bucks and let them buy lunch like the rest of the world?" Not possible. They eat no wheat and no dairy. And they eat healthy. I don't care how hard the schools are trying to make healthy lunches. A chicken nugget is a chicken nugget. And our elementary school serves "cotton candy" ice cream that is blue and pink!!! Gianna says, "Blue! Chemicals!" That's my girl!

Damn, I'm off topic. So, today before Mia's event at school I was chatting with a senior administrator and others and they said to me, "I noticed Mia's sandwich wasn't cut up yesterday. She broke the quarter into pieces and popped them into her mouth." First, that a senior (I mean THE senior person in the building) noticed Mia at lunch, and what and how she was eating blew me away. I was thrilled. Second, she told me that Mia asked a typical peer to open her organic raw fig and nut bar. (Funny, no one wants to trade lunch with my kids.....) Mia tapped the girl on the shoulder and handed her the bar. PEER INTERACTION! And Mia's paraprofessional this year is a delightful woman whom I know from the elementary school. Mia is going to have a great year.

So, today I am singing the praises of my beautiful Mia. We call her Mini-me as she does resemble a certain older Stagliano woman. But Mia got sprinkled with fairy dust and is a thousand times more beautiful than her Mom. My Mia Noel. Love that girl.

Oh, yes, she is beautiful! And yes, what a moment to celebrate. Good for you, Kim. I love this, "Mia is going to have a great year."

Positive thinking, my friend. What a lovely way to start the day.

She is breath-taking. Beautiful. I love how engaged and joyful she is in that pic.

I saw what was coming while reading your post, and started pumping my fist in the air, yelling GO MIA! My students thought I was a little wacko during Homeroom.

I love my Miss M, and I have enough for yours, too. Go M & M!

I love those little sparkles. [we have bite sized pieces too, for similar reasons]
Best wishes

She is beautiful and SMART!

What a great start up to the year.

BTW...my kids are addicted to those fig bars thanks to you.

HA! I'm glad, Michelle. They are yummy. For those of you wondering what they are, "Clif Organic Raw" the Chocolate flavor. $1.29 each at Trader Joe's. A fortune anywhere else.

Miss Mia is a beauty indeed. Thanks all.

Kim, what a wonderful story! And Mia is gorgeous!

You'll have to send me your bread recipe. I've been buying the EnerG Tapioca loaves. Hutton likes them, but they just seem so...ehh.

Laura, I use Bob's Red Mill Wonderful GFCF mix. My next purchase is a bread machine. It's a pain in the ass to wait for the dough to rise. Keep checking it, etc.

She's going to be a hottie (taking after you). Watch out for the boys.

What do you mean GOING to be a hottie??
Kim you must be fit to burst, I would be! A real "that's MY daughter" moment

That is really a beautiful story, she is really reaching out, one bite (fig bar) at a time. It is a very good start, and it give me the chills just thinking about it.
She is so beautiful, has a smile that lights up the room and does look exactly like her mom. I am sure there will be many, many more of these moments this school year. Thanks for sharing, made my night.

she's so like her mom alright - a real looker. lot of happiness in that picture. delightful. makes me feel proper chipper, so it does, and takes my mind off the mess I have made of my big toe (you don't want to know, but say a wee prayer to the toe fairy that the nail grows back - i miss the one i had)

What a beautiful picture of a smiling, happy child. She's already a beauty, Kim. Even if she weren't good looking, too! ;-)

Stories like this make me smile.

Very good for Mia for both initiatives and kudos to the senior administrator for noticing and telling you about them. Sometimes those folks care more than we think.

Wow, Kim - she certainly is beautiful. What a gorgeous girl you have.

and congratulations on the fantastic lunch!! I do the organic, chemical free thing, too. I did gluten-free for a while, but it didn't seem to matter one way or the other with my kids, so we're back to normal bread (and they're thrilled). But it is a lot harder, isn't it?

Kim Rossi Stagliano said...

Thanks, all. Avhrahn - Well, at least they'll know you by your limping, yes?

Mystery Robin, regular bread? How I dream of buying a two dollar loaf of anything I want! But the diet has worked for my girls so, GFCF it is.

Off to feed the ladies breakfast! 6:30am and I hear Gianna singing her way down the stairs. And my coffee is tasting fine.

And I get to work on my revisions today! I'll blog it.

Miss M looks a lot like you

Kim Rossi Stagliano said...

Woof, John!

Mia looked like me 24 hours after she was born. It was eerie. It's the eyes, hair color and the face shape mostly. Bella also has the same large blue eyes and dark lashes. But has her Dad's side's perfect nose. The Mackey nose is to die for. Mia and I got Rossi honkers. Miss G has almond shaped green eyes, like my sister, and favors her Dad too. I wonder what our boys would have looked like if we'd had them?

Last week at the pool I met a family whose neighbors have three girls. Mia. Gianna and Isabella. How unlikely is that?

Check out John's blog for a cool entry on spending the day filming with The Today Show.

WAIT! I don't mean to imply we were going to have boys and "didn't." We got pregnant with, and had, three kids. Girls. I'd love to adopt a boy, but who would ever let us adopt?

Hi John!
I found your book on Amazon UK so you could go right to international!! :)

Mia is lovely. She's going to break a lot of hearts!

I love this story.

I LOVE her picture and she does look so much like you! Yay for her wonderful progress--your little girl's growing up on you and learning some independence too!

Kim Rossi Stagliano said...

Rainmom, are you in the City? Are you coming to John's debut on the 25th? I blogged it a few posts down.

Find me! Look for Mia plus 30 years.... :)

Kim,

You must be a Whole Foods shopper, too. I'm impressed with the homemade bread! What a great photo of your daughter, Mia. I am going to search for those Clif Organic Cookies for my son. I look forward to meeting you'all in the City. I am hoping that he has a tremendous turnout.

Kim Rossi Stagliano said...

Who can afford Whole Foods? I get the Clif "NECTAR ORGANIC" bars at Trader Joe's. Best price in town. The bread is Bob's Red Mill GFCF Wonderful mix. I do want to buy a bread machine so I don't have to struggle creating a warm place for the dough to rise. Will you find me at the B&N? Shall I wear a red rose? An autism pin and necklace? :)

The Muse said...

I won't have trouble finding you. I will just look for the spunky, "enviably skinny girl" smuggling her own beer in a brown bag and some crispy creams wrapped in wax paper! AHA! You won't know me; but I will know all of you! This could be a very fun game. Perhaps you will recognize my voice?

PS. I think we should all get pins made that say "Woof".

Kim Rossi Stagliano said...

Muse, too funny. I love the WOOF pins. Great idea. JOHN, put your people on that right away.

My donuts are from Dunkin Donuts. Maybe from Honey Dew when I'm in Mass. Poricelli's when I'm Jonesing and at the grocery store. Never Krispy Kreme. I ain't no Southerner! I have bought Krispy Kremes in fund raisers though. You know, just to raise funds. Mmmm, licky sticky fingers!

Can I bring beer?. Whoo hoo!

The Muse said...

Of course, Dunkin Donuts! Isn't your husband a cop? Well, that explains that. How perceptive of you; my husband is a Southerner. I have acquired some of his accent and tastes for southern food. I told Stephen, the wine connoisseur, that I was planning to bring some CHOCOLATE wine to celebrate!

When are you planning to arrive in the city?

Anonymous said...

My husband a cop? Part of me is glad he isn't, part of me wishes he was! It's that whole uniform gun on the hip thing. We'll be there before 7 I'm sure. Who knows what actual time. Email me offlist at my gmail account (accessible through my profile) and I'll give you my cell.

Hey Kim,

I thought that you’d like the “Woof!” buttons idea.

I’ve been telling John that I want to be his licensing agent for the John Elder Robison memorabilia…

Just think of the endless marketing and licensing possibilities for John. There could be “Woof!” pins, t-shirts, caps, bumper stickers, and doggie treats. John Robison bobble heads! Thomas the Tank could have a special limited edition collectable “John” engine. Milton Bradley could design a special misfit toy in John’s honor that has all kinds of bells and whistles. There could be an Aspergian “Beefcakes” calendar, with John as the accordion fold out centerfold. He could be photographed from behind, looking out from under the hood of a Bentley in his shop with his low-slung tool kit on, looking back with a sultry glance over his shoulder. Or Tonka could manufacture some Rolls Royces that come with a tool kit for kids. Kentucky Fried Chicken might even come out with an organic, clean, hormone & antibiotic-free range chicken that John could sponsor. Ben & Jerry’s may consider dedicating an ice cream flavor to him. Who knows?!? Nintendo could design an exploding guitar video game using Kiss music in the background. Instead of the SLR lens, Nikon Camera could come out with a high tech JER lens. There could be an assortment of “Woof” pillows packaged in sets for “sleeping in piles” that we could sell to Bed, Bath & Beyond. We could market JER inflatable sex toys, just like in his book. (I’ll bet that you have some creative ideas, Kim that you could also suggest.) And we can’t forget his adult films and the “Robison’s Resplendent Eater of Cats” Memorabilia. That opens up whole new avenues of distribution for him…

Kim, your daughter is just beautiful.

And as someone who is just learning not to eat blue and pink foods that weren't born that way, I think Gianna is a smart cookie.

oh my! i have no idea if you'll ever read this with over 30 comments and i'm days late in blog reading. i'm teary eyed! i love love LOVE those moments. what a great day! blessings to you and Mia for an amazing year!

Wipe those tears, Irene! ;) Thanks. KS

Kim,

No creative licensing ideas or snarky remarks? I like teasing people, especially John. Although sometimes I'm not sure that my jokes translate well in the written form. I was hoping that you'd like this game...

Anonymous said...

I'm still stunned by the calendar image! LOL!!! Woof tatoos for everyone! And Botox for everyone too (there's a perk!) so we don't oversmile. You know how women smile too much? Makes us look "weak", like Katie Couric asking about A mass murdered with that joker smile of hers? I thought your comment was hilarious.

The Muse said...

Kim,

I love the Botox idea- too cute!

Although I wasn't suggesting an X-rated calendar, but rather a PG-rated one, like the firemen have. I think that I might have embarrassed John. Sometimes he doesn't understand teasing. I just imagine that this book is going to take on such larger proportions than he realizes. I believe that my point got lost in my silliness.
