Turtle Mountain Coconut Milk Ice Cream & Yogurt!
Hooray! My local Stop & Shop brought in Turtle Mountain coconut milk ice cream for me! I bought almost every container today. I haven't seen the yogurt yet - that's another buyer. It's such a treat to give the girls yogurt again!!

Jealous!!!
I have to drive like 40 minutes to get this from Whole Foods. I will have to see if my local Stop N Shop can get this.
We just bought this on Monday and my kids love it.
Yup - I'm not schlepping to Whole Foods and it's only 20 minutes away. The mint chip ice cream is sooooo good! And no artificial color! And organic ingredients. It's such a joy to have ice cream on hand for school parties and such. I'd been making ice cream - but I can't make it as good as this stuff, even my coconut milk ice cream. And the price isn't all that different at the end of the day. Not enough to offset the convenience on this one, anyway.
Thanks, HKM.
Mmm! We just bought the vanilla bean ice cream and GFCF ice cream cones yesterday. Nick got to have his 1st ice cream cone in a loooong time since going GFCF. It was so good!
Spread the word - they have coupons on their site too. Blog this company. I'm a big believer in blogging the people who make our lives better, easier. Grab the photo from my blog - no problem.

Praise God from whom all blessings flow!
YUM!
I tried coconut milk yogurt which is on top in the photo. I read ingredients. One of ingredients is carageenan.
I read that carageenan is another name for MSG. MSG has more than 10 different names -hydrolysed protein, yeast extract etc.
I also worry about MSG. But carageenan is not MSG, it's from seaweed and is a natural thickener and stablizer. So is guar gum and xanthan gum.
This isn't a company that would fudge on its ingredients and be able to survive.
"Carrageenan is a rather new additive. It is a complex polysaccharide extract made from seaweed, and is used as a binding agent. Experimentally, carrageenan is used as an agent to induce intense inflammation in experimental animals. A recent study found that when carrageenan was injected in animals along with a cancer-causing chemical, tumors appeared more rapidly and in significantly higher numbers than in control animals injected with cacinogen alone. The same was seen when human breast cancers were implanted in animals along with carrageenan: the combination made the tumors grow faster and spread more widely than in control animals. As a result, carrageenan is classified as a tumor promoter.
Many foods contain carrageenan, and the number continues to grow. It is commonly found in baked goods, ice cream, candies, and breads. It is particularly hazardous for those either at risk for colon cancer and those who already have or have had colon cancer, since carrageenan comes into direct contact with colon cells. It is also suspected to worsen inflammatory bowel conditions such as ulcerative colitis."
Why are you "anon?" You're allowed to share info here. I don't own stock in Turtle Mountain or anything. I just like having an ice cream alternative for my children, who have gone without for a long long time. Our diet is cleaner than 99% of Americans', I can assure you. I'll take the seaweed....
Kim
As with everything, it's a trade-off. I'm with Kim, I'll take the seaweed derivative over the junk that most kids eat.
Unfortunately, the actual whole Turtle Mountain product line is out for us for a much more basic reason than the seaweed derivative. We can't do coconut.
So I'll continue to stick with my home made egg based ice cream as a once a week treat (limited eggs only for my two)
And then I realize that the product also contains various phosphate derivates (I assume as stabilizers, and preservatives?), one of which is calcium phosphate.
Those are actually bigger no-no's for us than the seaweed derivative.
Sigh, once again it is confirmed to me that if I want to give my boys good healthy nutritious stuff that fits within their dietary frame work, I got to make it myself (cheaper too, actually, from a money perspective).
Carrageenan (Irish Moss) is a lipotrophic (has an affinity for lipids—fats) that assists in fat metabolism. Carrageenan has been shown to lower blood cholesterol.
Just sayin'. As with EVERYTHING, there are goods and bads - shit, even an apple can be harmful to some (my diabetic stepdad, for instance).
You know you can make gfcf icecream really easily don't you? Cost a packet less too! I'll email you the recipe if you want. Just glossing over how nice that dessert looks....
Hi Kim,
I was thrilled that our local health food store got the yogurt and now the ice cream too. I mentioned the ice cream in post recently, but I may do a whole thing on coconut and toss them in again.
I learned about this Company from you and the adorable photo of Bella enjoying it at Age of Autism. Thanks for letting us know! My boy lovest the stuff!
I agree, with ingredients it's a personal judgement call.

Kim, you asked me why I am anon. I prefer to stay anon for the time being. But I will put down my name. Carla. I have a neurotypical 4 year old son who has a few allergy- dust mites, ragweed. Do you have info on natural treatment of allergy?
I came to your blog while I was reading on the subject of vaccine.
I am impressed that you have a regular commenter from England.
Carla
Welcome, Carla! There are lots of natural treatments - even for the symptoms of allergy. Head over to a natural foods store. And there are allergists who use sub-lingual testing - and then homeopathic drops to stop the allergies. They are MD's but complementary MD's. You can find one at The American Academy of Environmental Medicine. GOOD DOCTORS!
I did notice that the Chocolate ice cream from Turtle Mountain uses GUAR gum instead of carageenan. Thanks for the info.
KIM
Thank you Kim. aaemonline.org has a list of doctors. Who is the best doctor in Tri-State?
Carla
Oh, Carla, I can't possibly answer that! I'd see who takes your insurance. Who treats children. What range of treatments they offer. K
Thank you again for the info, Kim
