(CBS) There are new concerns about Gardasil, the vaccine that prevents a virus that caused cervical cancer. It's approved for girls as young as nine. And five million have received it since it was approved two years ago. The FDA and its maker insist it's safe. But CBS News investigative correspondent Sharyl Attkisson has exclusive information on some very serious side effects.

Merck's comment that "nothing is more important to Merck than the safety..." (in the written piece) is absolutely chilling.

IT's sad. No parent wants to face the dilemma of healthcare and protecting her child and health and protecting her child from the healthcare. Look, the SEC couldn't stop Bernie Madoff, the FDA can't stop a filthy peanut plant, companies were given free rein for 8 years - why do parnets think the pharma companies are any better or safer. They aren't. Let's not be naive. Girls are being mained and dying from Gardasil. End of story. Are genital warts dreadful? Yes. Do 95% Yes. Do some lead to deadly cancer? Yes. But Gardasil is still a crap shoot. Give your children CONDOMS and common sense.

Thanks for the alert. My niece is supposed to get this shot soon. I'm sending her mom this link right now!

I've known several girls who got the vaccine and they've been fine. I've also known several women who've died of ovarian cancer and it was no picnic.

How often have mothers left doctor appointments and gone straight to our computers to research the prescription, vaccine (you name it) that was not discussed objectively and openly? The more I learn, the more I have HUGE trust issues with our healthcare system. The only way around this mistrust, for me, is to handpick my doctors according to the "trust scale." But not everyone has that option. So yes, it is sad and I hope that we don't get so buried by our economy that our country is past the point of fixing it.

BTW, Gardasil is associated with cervical cancer - not ovarian. Every cancer death is dreadful. No arguing about that.
