"Whatcha been doin', Kim?"

"Oh, just sitting around."

"Really? That's not like you, is it?"

"Not at all. I usually move at warp speed."

"So, um, why all the sitting?"

"Because my little sweetheart is learning to use the toilet."

"How's she doing?"

"GREAT! Success after several years of trying."

"Years? Wow. So what's your secret??"

"You must mean my, "SECRET WEAPON."

I took a toilet training seminar by the dynamic, engaging, delightful Brenda Batts at the National Autism Assoc. Conference earlier this month. Brenda Batts knows what she's doing. She's a fantastic presenter. Her system WORKS. I have the clean undies to prove it.

I'm so happy for my daughter, who is feeling both dry and proud this morning. Thank you, Brenda Batts!

Go Bella! Go! (In more ways than one.....and two!)

email me your secret - I have an envious friend who's not done so well as we did with our two girls and I'm sure she'd love any new ideas. We didn't know the extent of our daughters' autism at the time so they were both clean and dry within normal bounds. Lucy then took rather more interest in what was going on than was helpful but I'm glossing over that....we all know what I mean!

I can only hope for the day...I don't know how to do it with a non-verbal son, although someone told me to check out the Foxx method? If my son got potty trained, I'd be drinking to that, too(heavily). I wonder how much money I've spent on diapers since birth...probably coulda had a new car.

Kathryn hang in there, just because he's not saying anything doesn't mean it's not all going in. It's hard when you get nothing back though isn't it? We used visual timetables and sequences with our non-verbal daughter - it was a battle but we got there in the end. Not sure if we could have been so ruthless about it if we didn't have solid floors everywehre at the time though. We decided using pull-ups was confusing for her so went to cotton pants and stuck with it but she was 3ish so things were a little easier size wise. These days to maintain a good average we use minimal fuss for cleaning up accidents and massive praise - water play with liquid soap for extended hand washing the whole nine yards - for correct seuencing on the loo.
Sorry to go on a bit but toileting is a bit of a passion of mine. Having a child sitting in goodness knows what for even a small amount of time s not fair on anyone, especially us parents
